My biography can be split up in two parts, both 12 years long. The first half of my life I lived in Russia. I was born in Moscow on 2 December 1980, in the country that, back then, was called the Soviet Union.
My memories of Russia are typically those of a child because I was twelve when my parents, my brother and I moved to the Netherlands. After living in refugee shelters for a couple of years we got permission to stay in the Netherlands and moved to Amsterdam.
From then on I went back to school, first to learn Dutch and then to get my highschool diploma. It was 1999 when I graduated and started to study physics at the University of Amsterdam.
I have always been a sci-fi reader and was fascinated by the terminology. I got really interested in physics when I learned more about it at school. After seeing a documentary about Stephen Hawking, and him telling about his ideas I was convinced that physics was IT for me.
At this moment I am doing “Particle and Astroparticle Physics” for my masters at NIKHEF. For this graduation project I am working on the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector. This detector will be the biggest one ever built. According to the planning I should be finished with my thesis in 2005. I would love to become a graduate student afterwards, at NIKHEF if possible.
Next to my study I play in a punk-rock band called Vitamin X. We already had quite some success with the band. We toured through all of Europe, the US and even Brazil and Japan. I hope to visit Japan again in 2005 when we tour Asia and Australia. This will be in between finishing university and starting my graduation.
When in the Netherlands I’m an active member of the Internationale Socialisten. Movies are also a passion of mine, just as my girlfriend Mariska. She is a student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy of Arts.
