I was born in November 1969 in the small town of Schramberg, in the Black Forest region of southwestern Germany. Since the age of 15 I wanted to become a physicist. I fulfilled this teenage dream when after military service I began studying physics as an undergraduate at the University of Karlsruhe in 1990, where I wrote my Diploma thesis in theoretical Physics in 1996.
I went on to do PhD work in cosmology at London's Imperial College and at the University of California, Davis. I received my PhD in September 2000 and started working as a postdoc in the General Relativity Group in the Department for Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Cambridge University. Focussing on the interface between theory and observation, I continued postdoctorate work at the Institute of Astronomy for two more years before moving to Fermilab in September 2004 where I am the David Schramm Fellow in the Theoretical Astrophysics Group. I am also a Lecturer on leave from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at London's University College where I work in the Astrophysics Group. My research interests lie in the area of dark energy, cosmic microwave background and large scale structure.
In February 1986 I met my future wife Ulrike. We were married in September 1998, and in 2004 our baby boy Jakob was born. It has been the biggest life-changing event for me so far!
I love listening to music from classical to jazz, electronica to rock, depending on my mood. The newest band I love to listen to is Mouse on Mars. I also love cooking, which clearly had its impact on my shape. I like going to the movies a lot, but recently I watch more at home on DVD. Hanging out in pubs with friends is a must for recreation and in winter I love downhill skiing in deep powder snow.
