I was born in 1954 and until the age of 16 I was deeply determined to
become an archaeologist. I attended the classical lyce and I loved Latin
and Greek.
Then I started to be attracted by the scientific disciplines. Do I have to
thank my physics teacher? I think yes. In any case, after high school, I
enrolled myself in physics and I focused my interest on the physics of the
nucleus. Achieving the degree, I got a specialization in health physics,
deepening my knowledge of aspects connected to the applications of nuclear
physics to medicine and protection from radiation.
At the same time I started my research activity in nuclear physics,
studying nuclear structure and reaction mechanisms at low and medium
energies. I currently carry out experiments at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), and in
the past I have performed experiments at the GANIL Laboratory, in France.
Recently, I added nuclear astrophysics to my interests. I coordinate the
research activities in the field of physics of the nucleus at the LNS and
I am a member of the INFN Committee for Equal Opportunity.
I married a physicist and we have a 16 year-old daughter. In the last few
years I have tried to find some free time, but I have not filled it with
things I would have liked to do when I was younger but couldnt do because
of job commitments. Instead, I have preferred to spend my free time at
home with my daughter. Even if she studies and I read or watch TV, I am
convinced that my presence is a support for her.
What to add? I have several nephews and nieces that I adore, and whenever
I can I try to spend a Sunday with them.
