The hottest property in the blogosphere as far as physicists are concerned is Quantum Diaries, where you can follow the escapades of a host of physicists around the world as they enjoy their year in the spotlight. Apparently the most popular one gets 3,000 hits a day - so either someone has a lot of friends, or fly-on-the-wall physics is more popular than I thought.

One hundred years ago, Einstein burst onto the world stage by publishing five papers that changed the way we think about the universe. This year, to commemorate that anniversary, Harris and three other physicists from Fermilab are writing online diaries of what it's like to be a modern-day physicist.

"What these scientific bloggers have presented so far is an oft-ignored truth. While the stereotype of physicists is people equally abstract and brainy, the postings show just how ordinary they can be."

"Directing a beam of protons to a detector 1000 meters away reminds Debbie Harris of Fermilab in Illinois of giving birth, because both processes have to occur in stages. These are highlights from Quantum Diaries, a new project sponsored by a coalition of particle physics labs to commemorate 2005's World Year of Physics. More than 20 physicists from around the world will chronicle their opinions, interests, successes, and failures over the next 12 months with regular dispatches, video clips, and photos."

Participating as a quantum diarist has resulted in a bit of celebrity status for Sarah Phillips. When she attends conferences, fellow physicists come up to her and comment on her entries. During this summer's open house at Jefferson Lab, several people attended because they had read her blog and they wanted to see what she was writing about. "One person actually told me that her daughter was trying to do better in her math class because my diary had inspired her," she said. "That made it completely worthwhile." She added, "Plus, I have never had anyone squeal when they saw me before."

"But my favorite part of all this is Quantum Diaries, a blog by 25 of today's Einsteins as they grapple with quantum physics and 4-year olds. Not clear which is the harder problem, but at least one gets less annoying after college. Here's a bit from John Ellis on gluons booming in Calcutta."

"If you aggregate hundreds of blog feeds (as blog geeks do) then you are probably inundated with an ocean of blogs and may be hard pressed to find those "smoother pebbles" or "prettier shells" amongst the great unwashed masses. Caolionn's (maybe it's pronounced KAY-lin) weblog is like that gem hidden away beneath an obscure rock waiting to be found."
